For a couple of years, the Tampere Rescue Department has used Neoteric hovercraft
with good results. Winters are becoming warmer and warmer so the ice is much
thinner, making hovercraft the best choice for rescue operations - better than
boats, snowmobiles or other rescue vehicles. An important benefit is that
hovercraft can be used in both water and in icy conditions.
“It will be good when this kind of hovercraft is used more because these
have proven to be suitable and handy vehicles,” says Rami Ruuska, head
rescue officer from the Ministry.” They are fast, lightweight and reliable
and they save lives. This is an excellent device”
The Tampere Rescue Department reports that a person who had fallen through the
ice was ready to give up but when he saw the hovercraft coming he decided to hold
on a little longer and he survived.
