Proposed expansion of the Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge

The Birmingham News, Birmingham, Alabama USA
27 August 2010
by Joe Songer

The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has proposed vastly expanding the Cahaba River National Wildlife Refuge, now just a 3,600 acre patch of Bibb County along the river. Under the proposal, the service could buy land along the river corridor from Helena to Centreville, potentially creating a 173,380 acre Wildlife Refuge. Also it could pay for conservation easements on an additional 106,415 acres - as far south on the river as Marion and extending up tributaries that feed the river into Shelby, Jefferson and Bibb counties.

The following photos feature Rick LeCroy, a referring agent for Neoteric Hovercraft and retired game warden from the Centerville, Alabama Conservation Officer.
